When it comes to weight loss, it’s not just psychological

Writer's picture: Melinda KarthMelinda Karth

With New Year's resolutions we see an uptick in gym membership and diet adverts. These adverts promise that, if we work really hard to lose weight, we can transform ourselves. In this post, I explain why weight loss is not as easy as changing the way you think.

Key Points:

  • Set-point theory suggests that each person has a predetermined weight where their body functions optimally.

  • Our bodies adjust their regulatory systems to keep us at our set-points.

  • Our body weights are not necessarily indicative of our health statuses.
