Why we don't know enough about eating disorders in adults

Writer's picture: Melinda KarthMelinda Karth

I chose to write about eating disorders in adults because there is ageism in eating disorder research and treatment. Consequently, we know very little about eating disorders in adults, despite a significant amount of adults having them. In this post I discuss biological factors during adulthood that increase an individual's susceptibility to developing an eating disorder.

Key Points:

  • Eating disorders in adults are serious illnesses.

  • Adults are often denied treatment because of their age.

  • The aging process brings new risk factors for eating disorder development.

  • More research is needed to understand eating disorders in adults.
